Soy Aquaculture Alliance’s July 1 webinar, The Soy Research Trifecta, will encompass a full view of SAA’s research areas of focus: improved aquaculture, soybeans, and tools for soy use in domestic aquaculture. University of Idaho’s Jacob Bledsoe, Ph.D. and Marina Subramaniam, Postdoctoral Researcher, will focus on three key projects:
Review of U of I’s 20-year genetic improvement research project to breed high-soy-tolerant rainbow trout
Physiology-based research to understand SBMIE and maximize soy nutrient value for fish
Machine-learning pathology assessment as a forward-looking automated and standardized intestinal histology scoring tool

One of the four projects approved by the SAA board for funding support in 2026 will focus on the evaluation of processing across various soy-based products fed to Pacific white shrimp. The global food shrimp industry relies heavily on this species, and the U.S. is one of its biggest importers, so there is great opportunity to influence the feed formulations overseas producers use by demonstrating effective soy-based ingredients processes.
Many soy products are in aquafeed, but the effects of heat treatment intensity on the nutritional content for this shrimp’s performance are, so far, poorly understood. This project, submitted by veteran researcher D. Allen Davis, Ph.D of Auburn University, will evaluate the effects of processing on soy ingredient optimization — for potential expansion of U.S. soy in aquaculture.
LONE-STAR LEARNING
As part of the SAA’s board meeting in Houston July 7-9, board members will accompany members of the Texas Aquaculture Association on a learning mission tour of various local producers. Our goal is to understand more about shrimp, catfish, and redfish production, shrimp processing, and on-farm vertical integration.
